  • High School sports are a major town attraction. $3 Adult, $2 child, $1 senior citizen. Music Events are Free.
  • It takes 1 complete year to become a resident for Hunting & Fishing Purposes.
  • Residents (1+ yrs in AK) may obtain 10,000 board ft. of free use lumber per yr. Permits available through USFS.
  • Parcel Post from lower 48 states take a one week barge trip plus it may take up to a week to get on the barge
  • Golf Course- Muskeg Meadows, PGA rated
  • Explore the logging roads. There’s a lot of wonderful recreation opportunities out the road (Long Lake, Nemo, Middle Ridge Cabin, etc.)
  • We do have a Movie Theater, Castle Mountain Entertainment!  Movies are usually Fri, Sat & Sun at 7pm & is $7

I Wish I Had Known…

  • Grocery Stores are closed on Sundays Open MondaySaturday 8AM- 6PM
  • Bank Hours M-TH 10-5pm and F 10-5:30, NOT Saturdays!!
  • Make-Up is slim pickin’s in town, so order elsewhere or buy a lot on vacation.
  • Amazon.com is great and Amazon Prime provides FREE SHIPPING!!
  • J&Ws is our only fast food, you can get sandwiches at the grocery store or The Stik!
  • Get an Alaska Airlines Mileage number, miles add up to a FREE ticket
  • Get an Alaska Airlines Visa card, you immediately get almost miles for one FREE ticket AND you get a companion ticket each year.
  • Become an Alaska Airlines Club 49 member, there are perks, see their web page
  • When ordering items and the vendor won’t ship to a PO Box, try to use your street number and “box _____” or the zip code + 4 (which is your box)
  • When traveling in-state on Alaska Airlines you can have 3 bags.
  • You can check buckets of laundry detergent and dish washer detergent (purchased at Costco) as luggage.
  • Don’t let the rain slow you down- if you wait for a sunny day, you may NEVER get to do it.
  • Make friends in towns near Wrangell… Ketchikan, Sitka, Juneau, Petersburg, Metlaketla, Haines, Craig, especially for the times the jet overheads!
  • Halibut Carcass makes excellent crab pot bait- don’t throw away cut up and freeze.
  • Out the road – (Feeder 4) is subject to more frequent power outages.
  • Deer Season – August 1- November 30th
  • Watch for Sandbars when you go up the River.

Other Tips…

  • Buy a boat! Canoes & kayaks don’t count.
  • Get a truck! Not a car.
  • Use lots of hairspray, due to moist weather hairstyles may tend to flatten quicker.
  • Always book flights early, in the summer many relatives, friends & tourists fly in.
  • If you can’t see the hills it’s raining, if you can see the hills, it’ll be raining soon.
  • Tourist Info- Stikine River, Chief Shakes Island, Rainbow Falls, Mt Dewey, AnAn, LeConte Glacier, Petroglyph Beach.
  • The best sales in town are during Midnight Madness, the 1st weekend in December.  By the way, it is usually from 6 pm to 9 pm, not midnight!
  • Weather- Mostly rain, some snow, some sun. Average – 45-50 degrees.
  • Education- Evergreen Elementary School, Stikine Middle School, Wrangell High School.
  • Restaurants- Zak’s Café, Diamond C Café & The Stik (The Stik is seasonal)
  • Play sports (youth)!
  • When students get involved in at least one extra-curricular activity, it’s an automatic pool of friends.
